Submetering: What is it?

Municipal Utility Providers are in the business of providing electricity, water/ sewer, and gas to residents nationwide. In a multi-family environment, they prefer to meter their services only to the point of entry to the property, leaving it to the owners to bill and collect the money for usage. Submetering is the installation of individual unit meters that captures specific usage so that residents may be invoiced for their consumption.

  • Meters: installed at the point of utility entry. For example, at the water heater.
  • Transmitters: These read the meters and send signals to a centralized collector.
  • Collection System: This is a radio receiver and some type of collecting device.
  • Communication line: Midway accesses your site via cellular connection, DSL line or dial up connection.
